A key to the understanding of all astrology is within the reach of anyone who understands the meaning of the ELEMENTS.
The ELEMENTS are the energy substance of experience.
The four ELEMENTS –Fire, Earth, Air, and Water- each represent a basic kind of energy and consciousness that operates within everyone, thus
those who belong to the FIRE ELEMENT,-Aries, Leo and Sagittarius- express the warming, radiating, energizing life principle which can manifest as enthusiasm, faith, encouragement, and the drive to express self.
The EARTH SIGNS,-Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn- reveal an attunement with the world of physical forms and a practical ability and improve the material world with patience, self-discipline and dependability. Security remains a constant goal for them throughout their lives.
The AIR SIGNS,-Gemini, Libra and Aquarius- need to detach themselves from the immediate experiences of daily life, and thus to gain objectivity, perspective and a reflective approach to everything they do.
The WATER ELEMENT signs,-Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces- represent the realm of deep emotion and feeling responses, ranging from compulsive passions to overwhelming fears to an all encompassing acceptance and love of creation. The water signs know instinctively that they must protect themselves from outside influences on order to assure themselves the inner calm necessary for deep reflection and perception.
The ELEMENTS have traditionally been divides into two groups,
FIRE and AIR being considered active and self-expressive, and
WATER and EARTH, considered passive, receptive and self-containing.
For example, the Water and Earth signs are more self-contained than the Fire and Air signs in that they live more within themselves and don’t allow themselves to project their essential energy outwardly without a good deal of caution and forethought. However, this enables them to build a solid foundation for action.
The Fire and Air signs are more self-expressive, pouring forth their energies unreservedly (at times ignoring limits completely): The Fire signs by direct action and the Air signs by social interaction and verbal expression.
The elements thus divided are considered to be generally “compatible”.
